Three Crowns, the first global arbitration law firm, is delighted to announce that it will expand into Madrid with the opening of a new office in autumn 2023. The addition of a Madrid office will meet increased client needs in Spain and Latin America and bolster the firm’s established practice in Europe.

To lead this expansion, Three Crowns partner, Carmen Martinez Lopez, will relocate from the firm’s London office. Carmen has handled commercial and investment treaty arbitrations under the rules of all major arbitral institutions, across a variety of jurisdictions, with a particular focus on Latin America and Spain. She is recognised in all major publications, with sources describing her as “one of the most impressive legal minds I have encountered”, a “truly gifted practitioner”, and having “worked on some of the biggest cases of all time”.

“Given the growth of our Iberian and LatAm practices, having a dedicated team in Madrid under Carmen’s able stewardship will enable our firm to be even more responsive to its clients’ needs and to continue the expansion of this important part of its offering”, said Georgios Petrochilos KC, the Executive Partner of Three Crowns.

Carmen will be joined in Madrid by Agustin G. Sanz, who will relocate from the firm’s Washington, DC office, and will be supported by wider associate and business services teams. Agustin, an Argentinian national, has extensive experience of both international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations involving disputes in a broad range of sectors. He also advises sovereigns and international organisations on matters of public international law. Agustin previously worked as an attorney-adviser at the Ministry of Economy and the Federal Communications Commission in Argentina, in addition to his academic roles at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Chicago.

Commenting on the relocation, Carmen said, “returning to Spain felt very natural for me and my practice and I am delighted to lead the establishment of the Madrid office for Three Crowns. Home to top-tier arbitrators, lawyers, and arbitral institutions, Madrid also offers unparalleled economic and cultural ties with the Americas. This ideal confluence of factors will ensure Madrid is set to become a truly global hub for international arbitration”.

Since its inception in 2014, Three Crowns has acted for and advised clients across the globe on some of the most significant disputes of all time/in history to go to arbitration, and secured for them, in some instances, multibillion-dollar awards. Excellence in advice, advocacy and client service, and value without waste, delivered by diverse and nimble teams are central to Three Crowns’ ethos.

  • Three Crowns conducts its own oral advocacy, providing clients with a comprehensive advocacy service and ensuring that every advocate is fully acquainted with the client’s objectives and the case.
  • The team boasts lawyers qualified in over 30 jurisdictions and who speak over 15 languages. The firm is committed to developing its lawyers into formidable advocates through ongoing direct interaction and mentorship from senior practitioners and extensive in house training programmes.
  • The firm also deploys the collective skills and expertise of its team members as part of a growing pro bono practice that is committed to international causes that make a tangible difference.
  • The Madrid office bolsters the firm’s already extensive practice in the region, having advised and represented clients with a Spanish or LatAm nexus in the energy, renewables, construction, pharmaceutical, telecoms and public sectors on their most significant disputes, securing some of the largest awards in arbitration history.

This will be Three Crowns’ third European office and fifth office globally. It follows the successful launch of a Singapore office in February 2022, adding to the original office locations in London, Paris and Washington, DC that opened their doors simultaneously in 2014.
