Nicola Peart to speak at Harvard International Law Journal Symposium 2026

Nicola Peart will speak on a panel titled “Disappearing States and Energy Sovereignty: Reconciling with the ICJ Climate Change Advisory Opinion” during the 2026 Harvard International Law Journal Symposium, taking place at Harvard Law School in Cambridge, MA.

The panel will explore how emerging climate jurisprudence is reshaping international law’s treatment of sovereignty, statehood, and natural resources. Panelists will discuss the legal implications of climate-driven state disappearance and the evolving concept of energy sovereignty in the face of global decarbonization efforts.

Nicola Peart will speak alongside Professor Anne Orford (Harvard Law School) and Andrew Loewenstein (Foley Hoag LLP).

The panel will take place on Saturday, 28 February 2026, and will be held in a moderated discussion format.

ABOUT NICOLA PEART

Nicola is an England and Wales qualified barrister and International Counsel in the Washington, DC office where she has a broad practice in international dispute resolution. She represents States, international organisations and private parties before a range of international courts and tribunals, including in complex and high value international commercial and investment treaty disputes, as well as in proceedings before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice.

She also appears in the English courts on arbitration-related matters, including the UK Supreme Court. In 2020, she was appointed Legal Secretary to the International Tennis Federation Ethics Commission and has since led numerous investigations into ethical complaints in sport.

Prior to joining Three Crowns, she worked as Assistant Legal Counsel at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
